Hi there!

I hope this post finds you in good health during these strange and uncertain times.

You might know me by my old name, so I’m sorry if this is confusing for some of you!

I’m dusting off my old account and making a return to deviantART. :dalove: H̶a̶s̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶b̶e̶e̶n̶ ̶f̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶y̶e̶a̶r̶s̶ ̶a̶l̶r̶e̶a̶d̶y̶?

I’ve had a lot of spare time on my hands ever since covid lockdown started over here in Australia. It’s winter here so I’ve spent most of my time inside playing Animal Crossing, some crazy dating sims and a collection story driven single player games. (Life is Strange is phenomenal btw.)

By far my favourite lockdown discovery has been indie games, and visual novels (the sort you find on itch.io specifically). Games like Adastra, Nekojishi, Pervader, Tennis Ace, Socially Awkward and FLW (to name a few). In fact I’ve had so much fun playing with visual novels that I’m here to announce…

I’m now working on my own visual novel! :la: choir

So! What’s it about?

Let me grab this little excerpt from my soon-to-be-published itch.io page.

Dingo's Kitchen is an interactive anthropomorphic cooking/romance/mystery visual novel featuring m/m romance. Prepare up to fifteen different dishes, uncover the truth about your brother's disappearance, befriend the locals and if you're lucky, cook your way into the arms of a stranger.

Cooking, comedy, mystery and romance are big themes here, and it very much follows the adage of “the way to a mans heart is through his stomach.” ⁽ᴿᵉᵍᵃʳᵈˡᵉˢˢ ᵒᶠ ʰᵒʷ ᵗʳᵘᵉ ᵗʰᵃᵗ ˢᵗᵃᵗᵉᵐᵉⁿᵗ ᶦˢ, ᴵ ᵗʰᶦⁿᵏ ᶦᵗ’ᵈ ᵇᵉ ʰᵃʳᵈ ⁿᵒᵗ ᵗᵒ ˡᵒᵛᵉ ᵃ ᵍᵒᵒᵈ ᶜᵒᵒᵏ.⁾

Nail your dishes and earn the affection of one of three local bachelors… Mess things up and you’ll be eating cereal for dinner, or worse. ⁽ˢᵒᵐᵉ ᵒᶠ ᵗʰᵉ ᵇᵃᵈ ᶜᵒᵒᵏᶦⁿᵍ ᵒᵘᵗᶜᵒᵐᵉˢ ᵃʳᵉ ᶜᵒᵐᶦᶜᵃˡˡʸ ᵇᵃᵈ⁾.

Some concepts I wanted to explore with this project:

  • What are some of the pressures and struggles that gay men face while dating? (Ghosting, lack of a real connection, gay loneliness)

  • Lots of single men don’t know how to cook even very basic dishes. How does this affect them?

  • How do you approach dating when kids come into the picture?

  • Culture shock is a very real thing that city slickers experience when they move to the country. How do you adapt?

  • How do you find family when your own falls apart?

Going forward this account will be focusing on content I create for the visual novel, namely sprites, backgrounds, food art, UI and other visual assets.

You’ll also be getting these handy development logs that document my game production process. What tools and tutorials I’ve used and how the community is involved going forward.

Some other little tidbits:

  • I’m building in TyrannoBuilder with Javascript and am hoping to have a demo available in August.

  • There are going to be three routes available in total.

  • I’m aiming for around four updates to the game in total. I want to keep things nice and tidy.

If you’ve made it to the end of this journal… Thanks for sticking around!

I’ll have more to share with you all very shortly! :la:
